Join us at the College of Staten Island for a series of thought-provoking and inspiring films that showcase the diverse experiences of the queer community. This in-person event is a unique opportunity to come together, watch powerful stories unfold on the big screen, and engage in meaningful discussions with fellow film enthusiasts. Don’t miss out on this exciting event that celebrates the beauty and resilience of queer identities.
At this difficult moment—especially for those in the transgender community—it is especially important to gain strength from the depictions of all kinds of queerness, and to learn about the struggles from those who have passed. Films, especially documentary films, don’t only tell stories, they are also portraits of people who strive to live their lives by their own rules. These portraits also provide us with insight into what propels artists and activists to create art and to foster change and challenge authority. With this event, our goal is to give our audience amazing, diverse examples of how to resist homophobia and transphobia—as well as racism and sexism—and to inspire attendees to make artwork of their own that challenges authority and commemorates unique identities.
We will be showing short films in the afternoon made by Staten Island folks, and in the evening, we will be screening the award-winning documentary Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story. In our break, we will have a disco party and refreshments. In addition, we will hold a panel of media industry professionals and LGBTQ+ organizations to provide information to attendees.
The event will take place in the Center for the Arts (Building 1P). All film screenings will be shown in the Media Culture Screening Room (223). The Disco Party and organizations will take place in the East Lounge nearby.
You are welcome to attend the entire day or portions. Free to attend as this event is open to the public.
