“Learning Machine Learning: Bridging Cancer Research and Education Through Python and AI”

Machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are now ubiquitous methodologies in all fields of research. This talk will highlight my development and implementation of these techniques in the production of tools for cancer research and education.

I will discuss my work combining Natural Language Processing (NLP) used within a web app I developed called OncoDigger – an app that aims to extract insightful information from cancer-related PubMed abstracts. Using similar NLP techniques, I will present how CUNY/CSI courses have been analyzed resulting in large-scale course analysis and the creation of an academic advising tool tailored to CUNY and CSI.

In the field of education, I will highlight a remote quiz application, aided by AI and QR codes, that I have developed and recently implemented in Bio170. I’ll talk about the app’s potential for expansion and provide statistics on its effects on student engagement and overall course GPA.

Machine learning and AI are pushing the boundaries of established methodologies to generate new approaches in scientific research and education – this talk will bring to light some of my adventures in these transformative fields.
