Estevanico: Tracing the Footsteps of a Remarkable African Explorer: The Atlantic Connection

Academics from around the world will delve into the life, achievements, and significance of Estevanico, a truly extraordinary African explorer of the 16th Century. History has recorded the name of Estevanico, as “the first great African man in America.” Born in Azemmouri, Morocco, this man became a folk hero in the folklore of Spain and legend in New Spain (the Americas). The conference aims to shed light on the incredible journey of Estevanico, who played a pivotal role in the exploration and mapping of the Americas during this era, despite facing unique challenges as an African slave. Artwork on display and live Moroccan music from Estevanico’s era will be available pre- and post-symposium. Refreshments will be served after the event.
