Professor Vaishampayan's research interests are in communications, signal processing, information theory, coding theory and distributed systems. His current research is on communication efficient methods for distributed machine learning and signal processing. Prior to joining CUNY, he was Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Labs-Research, NJ, where he served as the head of the Communication Sciences Research Department. He has served and is currently on the editorial board of the IEEE Transactions of Information Theory (2004-2007; 2017-2020), has served on numerous IEEE technical program committees and NSF review panels. He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE for contributions to error resilient data compression.
