April Cheng

Lecturer

April Cheng is a full-time lecturer specializing in American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Culture. She began her teaching career at the Sign Language Center and transitioned to the university level a year before the pandemic. With extensive experience teaching ASL, her work focuses on advocating for Deaf individuals within the Deaf community and raising awareness about their legal rights, such as Miranda rights.

April has developed innovative teaching methods to support second-language learners and foster inclusivity in both academic and professional settings. She has been working as a DeafBlind interpreter for over a year and is passionate about spreading awareness of the Deaf and DeafBlind communities. She highlights the importance of recognizing ASL and ProTactile language as integral components of accessibility for these communities.
Deeply engaged with the Deaf and DeafBlind communities, April dedicates her time to advocacy and accessibility. She is fluent in British Sign Language (BSL) and ProTactile language and is currently attending immersive ProTactile training to earn certification. She is also preparing to pass the BSL interpreting exam to become a multilingual interpreter in the future.

Outside of her professional life, April enjoys traveling, exploring diverse cultures, working closely with the DeafBlind community, and immersing herself in new environments where she can learn new languages and expand her knowledge. She is passionate about learning new things and challenging herself every day!
