The mission of the Center for Environmental Science (CES), along with CSI and CUNY, is to serve the Staten Island-New York community, focusing on excellence and equal opportunity in scientific research and education. CES was established at the College of Staten Island in 1987, as an outgrowth of the Environmental Science MS Program. CES is uniquely situated to foster and conduct research on a variety of environmental issues. Activities have included, but not limited to, research on wind energy, toxic releases, waste water treatment, bioconcentration of metals, volatile organic compounds in air pollution, consequences of global climate change, which flooding produced by storm surges and severe weather events, the ecology of wetlands and forests, proximity to landfills on human health, cancer, and an analysis of regional transportation systems.
Current funding emphasizes the Staten Island Breast Cancer Research Initiative, research on offshore wind turbines, and research on the risk of flooding in the New York City area. CES serves as a resource to both citizens and officials on Staten Island to improve all aspects of environmental hazards to improve the health and well-being of our community.
Our goal is to find scientific, educational, and legal solutions to environmental problems and begin to institute the solutions on both the local, regional, national, and international bases.
