Admissions

The purpose of our Master of Social Work (MSW) program is to educate students for advanced, urban social work practice in the community, region, and worldwide, with an emphasis on meeting the needs of people with disabilities (broadly defined to include developmental, intellectual, physical, sensory, psychiatric and chronic illness). We seek students with a desire to create a just and equitable world for the future of humanity, ending oppression, embracing diversity, and ensuring that individuals, communities, and organizations function at an optimal level.

Priority Application Deadline extended to April 30th Fall admission only.

Admission to the MSW Program (60 credits)
Students entering the MSW program will complete 60 credit hours, which includes 2 field internships (totally 1200 hours). The following are required for admission:

  • a Bachelor’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution
  • successful completion of a statistics course (e.g, MTH 113)
  • official transcripts
  • overall GPA must be at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale
  • an application with personal statement
  • a copy of your resume
  • three letters of recommendation from instructors or supervisors (not family, friends, neighbors or therapists)
  • an interview may be required

Admission to the One Year Residency Program (60 credits) 
Students entering the MSW OYR program will complete 60 credit hours, which includes one September to August field internship (totally 900 hours).

The following are required for admission:

  • a Bachelor’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution
  • successful completion of a statistics course (e.g, MTH 113)
  • official transcripts
  • overall GPA must be at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale
  • an application with personal statement
  • a copy of your resume
  • three letters of recommendation from instructors or supervisors (not family, friends, neighbors or therapists)
  • an interview may be required.

To be eligible for OYR students must:

  • have two years or more social service work experience in an approved agency;
  • complete their internship with their current employer;
  • have been employed at that agency for at least one-year full time;
  • be assigned to a different unit of the agency for the internship portion of their work hours;
  • have a different supervisor for the internship hours who meets the requirements of the program.

Admission to the Advanced Standing Program (32 credits)
Students entering the MSW Advanced Standing program will complete 32 credit hours, which includes 1 field internship (totally 720 hours). Students who completed less than 480 hours in their BSW/BSSW program will have to make up the necessary field hours in their specialization year internship placement. The following are required for admission:

  • a Bachelor’s degree in social work from a Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) accredited program within the past five years
  • official transcripts
  • overall GPA must be at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale
  • an application with personal statement
  • a copy of your resume
  • three letters of recommendation from instructors or supervisors (not family, friends, neighbors or therapists)
  • a copy of your BSW final field evaluation form
  • an interview may be required
