Application and Admission

A student must have completed, or be in the final semester of completing, the required preā€major courses at the time of application.

Deadline for Applications/Notification of Decision

February 15th for entry into the Fall of that same year.
At least two members of the MLS Admissions Committee review applications and applicants will be notified of decisions in April. Please consult the Program Director for specific admission procedures, and/or the catalog for admissions and retention policies in their entirety.

Admission and Retention Requirements

At the time of application, students must have completed the foundational courses, a minimum of 16 credits in residence, and must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA for entry into the program. Students are required to maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and a 3.0 in the major to remain in good standing with the MLS program.

Minimum Grade Requirement

Students must earn a grade of C or better in all Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) courses. A minimum grade of C is required for a biology course to be used to satisfy a prerequisite for a biology course required for the major requirements for the BS in Medical Laboratory Science

MLS Essential Functions

Students must meet the following non-academic essential functions:

  • Vision
    The student must be able to read charts and graphs, instructions, read instrument scales, discriminate color, read microscopic materials, and record results.
  • Communication: Hearing, Speech, Writing
    The student must be able to verbally communicate understandably
    The students must be able to communicate effectively in writing
  • Fine Motor Functions and Manual Dexterity
    The student must process all skills necessary to carry out diagnostic procedures, manipulate tools, instruments and equipment.
    The student must be able to move freely and safely about the laboratory.
  • Intellectual and Behavioral Skills
    The student must possess the following intellectual skills; comprehension, measurement, mathematical calculation, reasoning, integration, analysis, comparison, self-expression and critical thinking.
    The student must exhibit ethical, compassionate and responsible behaviors

Accreditation, Certification and Licensure Eligibility

  • National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science
    The CUNY College of Staten Island Medical Laboratory Science program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS). The program is required to comply with NAACLS standards for MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE (MLS). To view a copy of the MLS standards please visit the NAACLS website at www.naacls.org

  • ASCP Board of Certification
    Graduates of the Medical Laboratory Science program are eligible for certification by the ASCP-BOC examination and for New York State Licensure. Granting of the B.S. degree in Medical Laboratory Science is not contingent upon passing an external certification or obtaining licensure.
