ACCESS TO THE WILLOWBROOK MILE

OUR VISION OF ACCESS

It has been a central concern as we have developed the Willowbrook Mile that all who wish to have access to the Mile will be welcomed. We have taken measures to ensure that barriers to access have been removed wherever possible. We welcome those who may face communication and mobility challenges and are working hard to create multiple ways of accessing the Mile and the information it contains. Here you will find information for visitors with limited mobility, who are blind or have low vision, who are deaf or hard of hearing, who need easy-to-read texts, or who need texts in languages other than English.

PARKING AND ARRIVAL

  • Every paved parking lot on campus has designated handicapped parking spaces. The closest parking lot to the Willowbrook Mile is by Building 1L (Library), which has five handicapped parking spaces. Groups larger than five please contact us prior to your visit to arrange parking.

VISITORS WITH LIMITED MOBILITY

  • The 2.5 mile long Willowbrook Mile is designed to be accessible to people in wheelchairs and with other mobility issues. The route is paved and has curb cuts. Stations are wheelchair accessible and include benches where visitors can reflect and rest.
  • Because the Willowbrook Mile is outside, it is subject to weather conditions and visitors may encounter water, ice, or paving cracks.

VISITORS WHO NEED EASY-TO-READ VERSIONS OF TEXTS

  • The Willowbrook Mile has been designed with ease of reading in mind; however, some complex ideas and space limits have meant that the text available on the stations does not always meet easy-to-read standards. Easy-to-read versions of the station texts, brochure, and the illustrated essay that appears on the website are also available for download as machine-readable PDFs. For those visiting in person, a printed easy-to-read version of the Willowbrook Mile brochure and the stations’ captions can be found at the Library’s Public Safety kiosk.

VISITORS WHO NEED NON-ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF TEXT

  • For those visitors who speak Spanish, Chinese, and Russian(?), translations of the stations text, the Willowbrook Mile brochure, and of the essay on the website are available as machine-readable PDFs. Special tour accommodations are available with advance request. For more information please email willowbrook@csi.cuny.edu.
